The Aviator (2004)
From IMDb Official Website
The Aviator is a biopic of the eccentric businessman Howard Hughes. Directed by Martin Scorsese and written by John Logan, the film starring Leonardo DiCaprio tells the story of business magnate, pilot, filmmaker, engineer, inventor, and daredevil Howard Hughes who could give Elon Musk a run for his money if they were contemporaries. The Aviator gives today’s audience a glimpse into the controversial life, downfall, and rise of the 20th century polymath, along with his battle with severe germophobia and obsessive-compulsive disorder. Fun fact: Howard Hughes was actually comic book legend Stan Lee’s inspiration in the creation of Tony Stark in Iron Man #1 back in 1968!
Dirty Dancing (1987)
From IMDb
One of the most definitive movies of the 1980s, Dirty Dancing is a social commentary on social classes and the difference between conservatism and liberalism. The Patrick Swayze and Jennifer Grey starrer tells the rebellious love story between a rich girl from a traditional family and a poor boy working as a dance instructor in a somewhat modern and happier retelling of Shakespeare’s masterpiece, Romeo and Juliet.
The Crazies (2010)
From IMDb
Imagine, one day, your peace-loving neighbors suddenly and inexplicably turn violent and attack everyone in sight—that is the plight facing the characters in The Crazies. A remake of the 1973 Sci-Fi horror of the same title tells the story of a small town that fell victim to a botched military experiment where the infected are overcome with extreme aggression and savage behavior. The film stars Timothy Olyphant, Radha Mitchell, Joe Anderson, and Danielle Panabaker.
Around the World in 80 Days (2004)
From IMDb
An action-comedy adaptation of Jules Verne’s 19th-century novel of the same name, this film follows Phileas Fogg—a wealthy English businessman who is out to break the 50-mile-per-hour speed barrier and prove he can circle the globe in 80 days. Accompanying Fogg in his journey is Asian fugitive Jean Passepartout, who recently robbed the Bank of England to retrieve a treasure stolen from his village. Around the World in 80 Days stars Steve Coogan as Phileas Fogg and Jackie Chan as Passepartout. Another fun fact, though: Passepartout is actually French in the books. The filmmakers made him Asian to intentionally cast Jackie Chan and add some hilarious hand-to-hand combat in the film!
RED (2010)
From IMDb
Old, retired, but far from being senile, RED is the story of former black-ops agents who spring out of retirement after hi-tech assassins threaten their already-quiet lives. RED is an acronym for “Retired, Extremely Dangerous,” which summarizes why the film’s villains aren’t so smart to mess with these bad-ass grandpas. RED is an action-comedy with an ensemble cast, including Bruce Willis, Morgan Freeman, John Malkovich, Helen Mirren, Karl Urban, Mary-Louise Parker, and Brian Cox.
