Our small home is my happy place. I love everything within its four corners. Wherever I glance at is filled with memories of warmth and laughter. And to better describe how I feel about it, I am dropping off this cliché: It is in our home where my heart is.
Four years ago, being a new wife and young mom, I feared if I could ever have a home similar to the place I grew up with. My parents’ country home (which I will be blogging about very soon), has a spacious playground, and a beautiful garden. It has fishponds surrounding it, too—my idea of a home to raise happy kids. So when I got married and when we moved to our small, box-like apartment, I had doubts… but I knew I had to stand up to materialize the happy home I dreamt to have. I may not have the luxury of space, I thought, but I could make the most of what we have.
This is the pathway to my parents’ fishpond right in our backyard. Beautiful, isn’t it? The photo was taken a year ago during my child’s 3rd birthday party. The vines covering the nook are thicker and greener now!
We adorned our own small home with symbols of love. We started hanging our wedding photos, and then carefully arranged the hand-me-down fixtures and furniture that our parents lovingly gave us. And so when we our first born came, we already have a place we could call “home.” We also created a small corner for him to play, and a small garden for us to enjoy. And then little by little, we are able to acquire the things we needed to live more comfortably.
From the very start, technology has played a vital role in my family to keep us in touch. Since I am
a working mom, telephone has been my way to constantly monitor my kid at home. I would call during my break time to check how he is, and give instructions and reminders to his attendant.
I always make sure that even if I am away for the day, I am always connected with home.
Part of Alex’s job being in the field of broadcast engineering is to constantly monitor signal quality thus he has to travel around the country for several times in a year. He has to travel abroad for equipment quality control visits, too. I am truly glad that we have a strong and reliable internet connection that provides us with complete internet experience, my husband is just a Skype away from me and Kyle whenever he’s away from home. Alex also always carries with him his Weroam so he can constantly communicate with us while working in any part of the country.

What makes a house a home? For me, it’s all about living in a roof filled with warmth and laughter no matter how small it is. It’s all about living in a place where one can freely be himself or herself. It’s also about living in a place where everybody loves and cares for each other. We have a happy home because we choose to make it a happy one. =)
