With WWDC23 underway, Apple introduced a new line of products, developments, and even health and wellness enhancements across their current devices. The Cupertino-based tech company has included features for mental health and vision health, along with an inclusion of the Health app on the iPad.
With the goal to “inspire people on their health journey,” Apple’s aim is to empower their users with critical insights on often-overlooked aspects of their health and well-being.
Tracking one’s mental health, the smarter way
The Mental Health feature–available on the Health app in iOS 17, iPad iOS 17, and the Mindfulness app in watchOS 10–allows you to track your moods, choose the attributes that contribute to your feelings (Work, Family, etc.), and name your
emotions (Grateful, Worried, etc.). From there, you can also have a glimpse of lifestyle factors that may have contributed to how you feel, and utilize these insights to manage your overall well-being.

To give you further mental health support, the Health app also includes mental health assessments to help you determine your risk levels and even generate the results in a PDF.
The developments in the Health app not only eliminate the need to download separate mental health trackers–since this feature also seamlessly integrates with your Health app, you now have an overall glimpse of both your physical and mental
health, and make decisions based on how they affect each other.
What’s more, the new Journal app that comes with iOS 17 allows you to practice gratitude every day by taking note of life’s moments. Thanks to its built-in Journaling Suggestions API, suggested moments are curated from your photos, places,
and even workouts. We’re excited to see how this new development would allow Apple users to practice mindfulness every day!
Seeing more clearly with vision health features
With the endeavor to reduce the risk of myopia, especially among children, Apple developed two key innovations to curb nearsightedness and help users be more intentional with eye health.

The first is Time in Daylight. According to the International Myopia Institute, increased time outdoors is one way to prevent myopia–it’s
also why the watchOS 10 was updated to measure the total amount of time one spends in daylight.

The other upgraded health feature is Screen Distance. Through the TrueDepth camera–the same technology that powers Apple’s Face ID–you will be alerted to move your device further away from you if you’ve been holding it close to
your face for an extended period of time. This nifty feature will remind you to engage in healthy digital use while minimizing the chances for digital eyestrain.
