FPS

As its name implies, FPS or First Person Shooters are seen from your character’s point of view. A classic example of this is the Counter-Strike series, Call of Duty: Warzone, and Valorant.

TPS

As opposed to playing in a first-person point of view, TPS or third-person shooting games are played in a different camera angle where you can see your character along with the other game elements. Some examples include the Resident Evil franchise, Rise of the Tomb Raider, and GTA (Grand Theft Auto) V.

RTS

RTS, which stands for real-time strategy, is dubbed as such because the actions of all the players, including the AI, happen in real time. This requires players to think on their feet to outsmart their opponents. Command and Conquer is one of the most popular games in this genre, along with Battle Realms and Age of Empires IV.

TBS

Turn-based strategy games are similar to RTS in that a sound strategy is required to win the game. However, players take turns in taking action in TBS titles, allowing them to make a more informed decision before passing the turn to the next player. The Civilization franchise (or CIV), Alpha Centauri, and the XCOM franchise best describe TBS.

TD

The goal behind TD, or Tower Defense titles, is to prevent a horde of enemies from reaching a certain part of the map. Players would need to set up weapons like cannons and traps at strategic locations to win. Ironically, one of the most popular TD games, Plants vs Zombies, doesn't even have a tower in it.

SIM

Have you ever wondered what it’s like to fly a plane, drive a real tank, or commandeer a warship? If you have, then simulator titles are as close as it gets to the real thing. Some popular sim titles include Microsoft Flight Simulator, World of Tanks / World of Warships, and F1 23.

RPG

Role-playing games, or RPG, is a genre where players assume the role of a fictional character that gets more powerful as it progresses through the game’s storyline. Eventually, it leads up to an ultimate “boss fight” that marks the completion of the game. Elden Ring and the Elder Scrolls series are some of the more recent examples of RPGs.

MMORPG

Massively Multiplayer Online RPGs (MMORPG) allow players to interact with other players. Unlike conventional RPGs, MMORPG titles are less about completing the game, and more about being the strongest through in-game purchases or by grinding. Notable MMORPGs include Diablo IV, World of Warcraft, and Baldur’s Gate III.

MOBA

This genre combines the multiple elements mentioned above, all in one package. In a Multiplayer Online Battle Arena (MOBA), the player’s main goal is to prevent opponents from destroying their towers (TD) through the use of their chosen character (RPG). All actions performed by the players take place simultaneously (RTS) and the game takes place on a server where thousands of online players (MMORPG) connect to play the game. DOTA, DOTA 2, League of Legends (LoL), and Mobile Legends are some classic examples of MOBAs.

BR

Battle Royale revolves around the concept of survival of the fittest. Players slug it out against their competitors to be the last man standing, all while staying inside of the safe zone that shrinks smaller as time goes by. PUBG, Fortnite, and Apex Legends are great examples of BR.
