Ghosts, ghouls, and zombies aren’t the only things that can send shivers down the spine of an average gamer. In the gaming world, there are simpler and more practical fears that can make a gamer break into a cold sweat. Here at NextUpgrade, we have compiled some scenarios that haunted us during our gaming journeys. If you have ever experienced one or all of our listed scenarios, you’re not alone!

Gamers aren’t always worried about what happens in-game but what happens out of it.

  1. You have 5% left on your device’s battery. Let’s go snap back a few years in the age when the GameBoy advance was really popular. Just imagine it: you are playing your favorite Pokemon game and are just about to beat this tough gym battle when you see the light in your device turn red. Not only do you have to worry about the battle ahead, but also your device's remaining battery. Will you be able to make it in time, or will time strike you out?

This was one of the things that made gamers sweat, which is why we carried around battery charge to reduce this “threat.” If we weren’t lucky enough to have an extra battery, we played it safe and cut our gaming time to save battery when bored. This can be applied.

  1. New peripherals blues. There is a joy of receiving a new device for our gaming stations, be it controllers, mice, keyboards, and even headsets. Normally, gamers would take a long time researching to ensure that the wishlist device is THE BEST DEVICE we can get. Normally, this is the case when we get it. However, one scary scenario is when that new device isn’t up to what we expected.

Two things come to mind. One is the money already spent on it, and the second is the dread of sticking to it to get accustomed to it. Don’t get this initial interaction wrong; sometimes adjustment is what it takes, but the initial reaction of regret is scary for a gamer.

  1. The ‘save’ anxiety. Gamers don't save compulsively for no reason; it's a ritual to ensure that progress is securely stored. When you go through our log files, sometimes you would see multiple consecutive saves just to really make sure that the game is saved because one of our fears is not having the game kept in a state from where we left off. Just imagine redoing a tough battle, losing this rare item, or just generally using the same amount of time when you completed it the first time—awful.

  1. The Dreaded Burnout. Imagine playing a game you really enjoy and suddenly hate it out of nowhere–or even worse, a slow burnout. Burnout happens to everyone, gamers included, and we try to avoid that. We counter these things by adding variety to our gaming library, having breaks, and sometimes just walking away from it all. The fear of hating the thing we love doing, hating our hobby, is one of the worst things ever.

  1. The horror of no Internet. Easily, one of the scariest scenarios we can have as a gamer is having no Internet: no stream, no games, no entertainment, just pure fear!
