A period drama about forbidden love set in the backdrop of the 17th century Tulip Mania that gripped Amsterdam, Tulip Fever follows the beautiful orphan Sophia (Alicia Vikander) who weds wealthy spice merchant Cornelius (Cristoph Waltz) after he offers a handsome dowry to her sisters. The story takes a turn when Sophia gets smitten with handsome young painter Jan Van Loos (Dane DeHaan), whom Cornelius hired to paint a portrait of him and Sophia. A supposedly cruel juvenile joke leads to a possible love story between two broken souls in Hateship Loveship. Johanna Parry (Kristen Wiig) is hired as a stay-in housekeeper for the elderly Mr. McCauley (Nick Nolte) and his granddaughter Sabitha (Hailee Steinfeld), whose mother died years ago. Ken (Guy Pearce), Sabitha’s father and McCauley’s son-in-law, lives in a different city but regularly pays a visit to his daughter. One night, after inviting Johanna and Sabitha to dinner, Ken writes a friendly note to Johanna. Johanna writes a response letter, but Sabitha and her friend Edith intercept the letter. As a cruel joke, the two teenagers forge a love note from Ken addressed to Johanna, going as far as creating a fake email for Ken and continuously sending sweet messages to Johanna under Ken’s guise.
