Asians are having their moment, and right at the center is Malaysian-Chinese actress Michelle Yeoh. After earning her first Golden Globe as Best Actress for her role in the science fiction film Everything Everywhere All At Once, the 60-year-old star is now the first-ever Asian woman to bag the Best Actress trophy at this year’s Academy Awards.
While we celebrate her historic Oscar win, let’s look back at the movies that skyrocketed her to fame. Here are four of Michelle Yeoh’s must-watch movies, which you can stream on HBO Go with PLDT Home!
Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon
Fun fact: Yeoh started her acting career doing action and martial arts films, where she was known for performing her own stunts. She almost quit acting after suffering
a serious injury. But a visit from director Quentin Tarantino, who paid homage and recited her fight sequence frame by frame, made her change her mind.
In 2000, Yeoh made waves starring in the martial arts fantasy Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, helmed by acclaimed director Ang Lee. It was a critical and commercial success, praised for its beautiful story, direction, and cinematography, not
to mention the stunning martial arts sequences.
Yeoh stars as a female warrior Yu Shu Lien tasked to deliver her best friend Li Mu Bai’s legendary sword, “Green Destiny,” to their benefactor in Beijing. After the sword gets stolen, it is up to the two friends to get the sword back.

Kung Fu Panda 2
Yeoh’s filmography is as diverse as they come, so it’s no surprise that she was also featured in an animated movie. In this sequel to the hit computer-animated martial arts comedy film, Yeoh plays the Soothsayer, a fortune-teller who delivers
a terrifying prophecy that drives the antagonist, Lord Shen, to do an unspeakable crime. Later on, she aids the protagonist, Po, in fulfilling his destiny.

Crazy Rich Asians
Yeoh lands another hit with Crazy Rich Asians, a romantic-comedy film based on a global bestseller of the same name. In the movie, Yeoh plays Eleanor Young, an extremely wealthy Singaporean socialite and overbearing mother who cannot
stomach her son dating a girl with a modest American background.
With a predominantly-Asian cast, this delightful movie nails the rom-com formula while dazzling you with the glitz and glamour of Singapore’s elite. Watch the trailer for Crazy Rich Asians below

Everything Everywhere All At Once
Yeoh plays her most pivotal role yet in this arthouse film. She takes on the role of an overworked Chinese-American immigrant and mother named Evelyn, whose family laundromat is being audited by the IRS. Evelyn discovers that there are multiple
versions of the universe and that she’s the only one who can stop the multiverse from being destroyed.
While the movie showcases Yeoh’s martial arts talent, the core of the movie is about a mother’s deep love for her family. It’s an epic film you can’t miss, so watch the trailer below and stream Everything Everywhere All At Once on HBO Go with PLDT Home!
