High Heat stars Olga Kurylenko as Ana Abramov, the co-owner and executive chef of Etoile Rouge with a dark past. Don Johnson, from Knives Out, plays her husband Ray. Kurylenko and Johnson shine in this film as they portray the multiple facets of their respective character’s relationship. From husband and wife, to business partners, and even badass action duo—their chemistry on screen is palpable.
It has a seasoned heel starring as its main villain
High Heat’s main villain is Dom (Dallas Page), a mobster who is attempting to burn Ana and Ray’s restaurant down to get the insurance money. If you were a professional wrestling fan back in the 90s, then you might know him better as Diamond Dallas Page, who was a multiple time World Heavyweight Champion. DDP may have retired from pro wrestling, but the undeniable heelish charm he honed as a pro wrestler definitely lends to his portrayal as the main antagonist of this film.
It turns the typical action movie tropes on its head
Action movies that pair a trained killer with an average person or damsel-in-distress are nothing new. Movies like Killers are an example of this film trope. Most of the time, the male lead usually takes on the trained killer role, with matching fight scenes and bearing the brunt of physical stunts.
High Heat, on the other hand, breaks away from this stereotype. Olga Kurylenko’s Ana is no damsel-in-distress, and she takes on the role of action star for this film. Ana as the kick ass woman of action while her husband Ray plays the everyman is a breath of fresh air to the genre.
Its action is reminiscent of great modern-day action flicks
Action movie connoisseurs won’t be disappointed with High Heat’s non-stop action. With Dom and his crew of henchmen forcing Ana to channel her secret past, they’re in for a surprise when their prey becomes the hunter. We’re reminded of more recent action movies like John Wick and Atomic Blonde that make fight scenes cinematic, paired with well-paced choreography. You surely won’t be disappointed with the gun play and hand-to-hand combat of this film!
