AB_5 Series Based on True Stories on HBO Go

With the sheer amount of entertainment available to audiences in the age of streaming, any series or movie that claims to be based on real-life events almost never fails to pique interest. For the filmmakers behind these stories, there’s always that attempt to balance accuracy and drama–a proven formula for success to fans of the genre.

Movies and series based on actual events? Yes, please.

If you’re one of these junkies, here’s a list of the top true-story series on HBO Go that should go on your watch list! Not only do they successfully balance fiction with non-fiction, but they are also excellent standalone films and series!

Love & Death

This HBO Original miniseries is based on the novel Evidence of Love: A True Story of Passion and Death in the Suburbs, a retelling of the story of Candy Montgomery–a God-fearing housewife who murdered her friend, Betty Gore, in the 1980s. The news of the killing sent shockwaves throughout their small suburb in Texas, as Montgomery was well-loved by the community.

While Love & Death is already the third retelling of the murder case, it’s set apart from its predecessors because of how they intentionally “went deeper to see what was going on,” , according to director Lesli Linka Glatter. Watch this Emmy-nominated miniseries on HBO Go with PLDT Home.

Chernobyl

This five-episode miniseries explores the 1986 nuclear accident in Ukraine, which was then a part of the Soviet Union. This terrifying tale examines the power plant’s reactor explosion and its effects on the workers, the community, and the environment. Well-adapted to the small screen, it also uses existing testimonies to further the narrative of the victims of this extraordinary catastrophe.

Chernobyl, which was created by Craig Mazin, has earned several awards, including the 2019 Emmy for Outstanding Limited Series. Stream Chernobyl on HBO Go with PLDT Home.

Dr. Death

Dr. Death revolves around Christopher Duntsch, a former neurosurgeon, who was sentenced to life imprisonment after maiming one of his patients. In less than two years, he injured 33 out of 38 patients, while two died as a direct result of his actions in the operating room.

The first 10 episodes of the TV series look into his private life. We’ll also get to see how the system allowed him to appear unnoticed, even after years of malpractice. Watch the chilling Dr. Death on HBO Go with PLDT Home.

Julia

Julia Child is one of the most significant celebrity chefs of all time, thanks to her penchant for making French cuisine part of everyday fare. Her life story is revealed in Julia, where Sarah Lancashire plays the titular role.

The series takes place in 1960s America, at the heyday of Child’s TV career. At the time, she was hosting her cooking show The French Chef. Each episode title is also named after a French dish, which makes the series faithful to the woman who made them mainstream. Partake on Julia on HBO Go with PLDT Home.
