House of the Dragon is more than halfway through its first season, and it’s safe to say the Game of Thrones prequel has excited fans since its pilot episode aired on August 22.

Who isn’t fascinated by these main characters’ silver-gray manes?

Set 172 years before the birth of Daenerys Targaryen, the epic series features more dragons, more magic, and more lore from author George R.R. Martin’s world of A Song of Ice and Fire and Fire and Blood.

Inspired by the medieval period, the show draws its concepts from 6th to 16th century Europe—the traditions, the culture, and the ensembles—as it introduces the Targaryen dynasty and puts the otherworldly Valyrian families at the fore of this Westerosi narrative. While House of the Dragon certainly takes liberties in its characters’ overall dress, the inspiration is clear. The Targaryens’ and the Velaryons’ silver-platinum hair truly steal the show with their looks alone!

If you’re planning on dressing up as one of the characters of House of the Dragon for Halloween, be sure to include their hairdos to make your play more accurate! Let’s discuss all the most eye-catching hairstyles seen in HBO’s House of the Dragon.

King Viserys I Targaryen

Viserys I, the fifth king of the Seven Kingdoms, ascended the throne after his grandfather Jaehaerys I was rendered without an heir upon losing his children. Viserys possesses the Targaryens’ long silver hair, often gathered in a half-ponytail. As the ruler of the Seven Kingdoms, this suggests orderliness—which is in stark contrast to his more chaotic younger brother Prince Daemon Targaryen.

Prince Daemon Targaryen

Prince Daemon Targaryen is King Viserys’ unpredictable brother. Brutal, selfish, and volatile, he is unapologetically ambitious—willing to do whatever it takes to sit on the Iron Throne. Throughout the series’ episodes, we have seen his platinum hair long, short, and in between. We often see his hair disheveled, especially after the harrowing city raid scene and the battle at the Stepstones.

Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen

Growing up in painfully patriarchal times, Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen developed a rebellious nature from her youth to adulthood. She is annoyed by the fact that many see her unfit as heir to the Iron Throne just because she is a woman. As a princess, Rhaenyra assures her white hair is kept; however, unlike typical women of this time, it is often styled simply with little to no adornments—except on more formal occasions.

Princess Rhaenys Targaryen

Princess Rhaenys Targaryen is best remembered as “The Queen Who Never Was,” cousin to King Viserys I who once challenged his bid for the Iron Throne. The wife of Lord Corlys Velaryon of Driftmark, Princess Rhaenys has always presented herself with a certain grace that often intimidated those around her. Her hair is often kept neatly, ending in a sharp ponytail at the back, resembling a dragon’s crown.

Lord Corlys Velaryon

As the Lord of Driftmark and the husband of Princess Rhaenys, Lord Corlys Velaryon has played a central role in House of the Dragon thus far. The Velaryon family, just like the Targaryens, are of Valerian descent, which explains Lord Corlys’ hair color. Among all characters in the show, Corlys has the most distinct hair—thick silver-gray locks that reflect his wisdom and adventurous nature.
