Denis Villeneuve’s adaptation of this classic space opera blew away both fans and critics upon release. Based on Frank Herbert’s Dune saga, the film is set in the year 10,191, when humanity has become a space-faring race. At the center of the conflict are two warring factions, House Atreides and House Harkonnen, who vie for control over the most valuable resource in the galaxy: the spice mélange.

Dune stars Timothée Chalamet as Paul Atreides, heir to House Atreides, who seeks to avenge his father’s death. Upon its release, Dune was awarded several accolades. It bagged six major Academy Awards, including Best Cinematography, Production Design, Visual Effects, and more.

Top-billed actor Will Smith returns to the big screen in this American biopic about the life of tennis coach Richard Williams, the father of Serena and Venus Williams. It documents how Richard and his then-wife, Brandy, coached the Williams sisters while working as a security guard and a nurse. It also details the family’s struggles to pursue the best training for the future tennis legends despite struggling financially. Joining Will Smith in the cast are Aunjanue Ellis as Richard’s then-wife Oracene Brandy Price, Jon Bernthal as Rick Macci, and Tony Goldwyn as Paul Cohen.

Meanwhile, Venus and Serena Williams are played by Saniyya Sidney and Demi Singleton. Smith’s performance earned him an Academy Award for Best Actor in a lead role. This is also his third nomination for the said accolade, while the film itself was nominated for Best Picture but lost to CODA.

The Batman

The third stand-alone live-action film in the Batman franchise to hit the big screen is easily one of the most anticipated movies of the year. Featuring former Twilight star Robert Pattinson in the lead role with Matt Reeves on the director’s chair, The Batman explores Bruce Wayne’s detective side as the film takes the caped crusader in a darker, grittier, and humanized direction. As fans and critics have pointed out, this is the only Batman film that does not glamorize Bruce Wayne. In this adaptation, Batman hunts down the murderous Riddler who is out to expose and later kill Gotham’s elite. Pattinson silenced nay-sayers in his take of DC’s favorite crime buster. Joining him in the ensemble cast are Zoe Kravitz as Selena Kyle a.k.a. Catwoman, Jeffrey Wright as Commissioner James Gordon, John Torturo as Carmine Falcone, Colin Farrel as Oswald Cobblepot a.k.a. Penguin, Andy Serkis as Alfred Pennyworth, and Paul Dano as the main antagonist Edward Nashton a.k.a. Riddler.

Paramount Pictures brings G.I. Joe’s most iconic character to life in this 2021 release. Snake Eyes: G.I. Joe Origins tells the story of an orphaned boy seeking revenge for his father’s murder. The boy trains himself in the art of combat; and, 20 years later, becomes a deadly ninja who assumes the identity of Snake Eyes (inspired by a game that his father’s killer forced him to play). It also explores the history of the titular character’s rivalry with Storm Shadow. Snake Eyes stars Malaysian actor Henry Goulding, who played the role of Nick Young in the 2018 romantic comedy Crazy Rich Asians. Alongside Goulding is Indonesian actor Iko Uwais, famous for Raid Redemption, Samara Weaving, who starred in The Babysitter, and Spanish actress Ursula Corbero, who charmed the audience as Tokyo in Netflix’s heist drama La Casa de Papel, a.k.a. Money Heist.
