Mythology has always been a great source of inspiration for modern storytelling. With movies that play on myths from across the globe, like Gods of Egypt, Troy, and A Korean Odyssey, the extra layer of built-in backstory adds more depth to their current story.

These games are Godlike!

Games that have tapped into the rich source of storytelling that is the various mythologies around the world are no different. We’d even say that it takes it a step further, as you’re now actively participating in the story as the player. From Santa Monica Studios Official Website

The God of War franchise has traversed multiple mythologies, beginning with the first God of War trilogy, which followed Kratos on his journey for vengeance against the Greek god of war, Ares, and eventually the entire Greek pantheon. Its most recent installment, God of War(2018), follows an older and more mature Kratos getting entangled with the Norse gods as he and his boy try to fulfill the last wishes of his late wife. You can experience Kratos’ story on Playstation and PC and catch up before the release of God of War: Ragnarok on November 9, 2022, for Playstation 4 and 5.

Hades

Hades

From Supergiant Games Official Website

Hades is a rogue-like dungeon crawler that follows Zagreus, the son of Hades, the Greek god of the underworld. The game’s story centers around Zagreus’ attempts at escaping the underworld, where he has to hack and slash his way against the various monsters tasked by his father to prevent him from leaving. Whether it takes just one attempt or hundreds of hours worth of attempts is up to the player. Hades is available for PC, Nintendo Switch, Playstation, and Xbox.

Age of Mythology

Age of Mythology

From Age of Empires Official Website

Age of Mythology is a classic real-time strategy (RTS) game and a spinoff of the Age of Empire series. This game allows players to take control of settlements from either Greek, Norse, or Egyptian factions as they battle against each other for supremacy. The game’s main campaign follows the story of Arkantos, an Atlantean war hero who gets swept into having to save the world from the devious plot of Gargarensis to kill Zeus by freeing the Titan, Kronos. His journey takes him from Greece to Egypt and the Nordlands, where their heroes and gods join forces to stop Gargarensis. You can still play this classic (2002) RTS game via Age of Mythology: Extended, available on PC.

Okami

Okami

From Okami’s Official Website

Okami centers around Japanese mythology, as the player controls Amaterasu, the sun goddess of the Shinto religion–but in this version, she’s portrayed by the most adorable of doggos. The player follows Amaterasu’s journey to retrieve the thirteen powers of the Celestial brush in order to defeat the legendary monster Orochi. This game is a bonafide classic that not many got to play during its original release, evidenced by it holding the Guinness World Record for the “least commercially successful winner of a Game of the Year award.” With its HD re-release in 2017, you can play this timeless gem on PC, Nintendo Switch, Playstation, and Xbox.
