AB_Leveling Up in Real Life_ Valuable Lessons from Playing Games

We live in a world where video games have become almost a vital part of our lives. Vital in a sense that it has crossed paths with our lives one way or another, be it through our cousins, friends, or even our workplace boss—the short of it is that it is evident in our society today.

Sometimes game lessons transcend the screen and manifest themselves as real-life lessons.

As a long-time gamer from my wee days, I can attest to this. And although there are perceived drawbacks from gaming, there are true instances where lessons and values have embedded themselves into my character from the video games I played. It goes beyond mere entertainment; video games can manifest their teachings in tangible insights used in our world. From problem-solving and strategic thinking to teamwork and resilience, the skills honed in the virtual realm can seamlessly translate into success in our everyday lives. So, here are the valuable skills I’ve gained from playing games.

Side quests are valuable. Just like there are main and side quests in video games, life also has scenarios where you need one main thing accomplished by a certain period. It is vital that we achieve those things, but life’s side quests are nothing to scoff at.

Have you ever been over-leveled in a game because of doing side quests? Side quests in real life can be simple tasks that increase your personal “stats”, like intelligence from reading, dexterity from playing outdoor sports, or charisma from spending time with friends and family. It's easy to categorize these things as meaningless, but if you provide a proper perspective, you can see their value—just have a healthy balance between life’s side quests and the main ones you need to finish.

Random encounters can happen anytime and anywhere, be sure to enjoy it when it happens. I just recently finished Red Dead Redemption 2, and it contained a ton of random encounters that were heartwarming, humorous, and sometimes terrifying. This made the world of the game much more lively and dynamic because it felt like things were going on in the background of Arthur Morgan. It felt like you were playing into a different world entirely.

The same can be applied to real life. Imagine other people living their own experiences before your random encounter. This means that they went through their own share of joy, despair, and other emotions. So if you share an instance together, it is best to enjoy it and live in the moment. The same thing goes for moments you share with friends and family. Stop thinking about the main storyline of your life and enjoy the short moment.

Punctuality can be rewarding. Gamers understand timeliness when it comes to special timed events that may drop valuable or rare items. Because of this, they gather in the general vicinity until the event actually starts. This is a transferable skill when applied in real life. Although not for all, some gamers would show up to real-life events prepped and early, at least in my case, personally. Additionally, if we understand how things happen in the first run, we will find a way to optimize the process further to get better and faster results—a win, win so to speak.

Despite being the protagonist of our own stories, our actions will always have consequences. This statement stands for itself because we simply cannot please everyone, and not everyone can share the same point of view we have. In video games, it sometimes is much more obvious because we get to see it from a third-person perspective. If you help this person A, it may turn out that the person may do something horrible along the line. You think the deed is good without seeing the different side of the coin.

Because of this, I understand that not all my perceived actions may be good and will have subsequent consequences or, with emphasis on OR, rewards as well—that makes life interesting. So just keep doing your best.
