Gaming history has been filled with many amazing titles over the years. However, there are some games that seem to have been lost in time, despite their popularity and huge fan bases. With the long dormant franchise Prince of Persia set to get a new release in 2024—the first in the franchise since 2013–there’s hope that these old favorites will make a comeback. Check out our picks!
Kid Icarus
From IMDB
Kid Icarus, first released in 1987, had a long hiatus before its revival in 2012 with Kid Icarus: Uprising for the Nintendo 3DS. The game underwent a significant transformation, shifting from an action-platformer to a third-person shooter with aerial rail-combat segments.
Kid Icarus: Uprising impressed gamers with its fun gameplay and unique weapon system. Players could also adjust their weapons to suit their style of play. Despite the game’s main protagonist, Pit, making appearances in Super Smash Bros., fans are still eagerly awaiting a new installment, hoping it won't take another 20 years for it to happen.
Sly Cooper
From IMDB
Sly Cooper was a stealth platformer series that immediately got gamers hooked. It had a good run of games, spanning four major titles–with the last one, Sly Cooper: Thieves in Time, being released in 2013. The franchise hasn’t had a new game out since then. With classic platforming franchises like Crash Bandicoot and Ratchet & Clank getting new releases, it’s a wonder why Sly Cooper isn’t getting a follow-up.
Twisted Metal
From IMDB
A staple of the 90s console gaming for the PlayStation, Twisted Metal was a vehicular combat game that lets you choose a driver and their signature vehicle to compete with other drivers. It’s surprising the franchise hasn’t gotten a new release since 2012, since Twisted Metal’s gameplay is built for online multiplayer battles. There is some hope though. With a Twisted Metal live action series coming soon, a revival of this gaming franchise and a new installment might be next!
Bully
From Playstation Official Website
The original Bully was released in 2006 and was a instant hit for Rockstar Games, developers of the massive ongoing franchises Grand Theft Auto and Red Dead Redemption. Bully was a story-driven open-world game that was incredibly entertaining. It was rumored that a sequel was in the works–but with the development of GTA’s latest installment taking most of Rockstar Games’ time, getting a Bully sequel is still unlikely.
The Legend of Dragoon
From IMDB
The Legend of Dragoon was one of the most underrated JRPG’s for the original PlayStation. It had incredible visuals and highly compelling lore. Some gamers may have been turned off by the timing mechanics of its battle system, but for some, the added difficulty forced grinders to rely on more creative means to progress than just overleveling. A remake or sequel may be unlikely–after all, it’s been two decades since its release–but fans are still hoping it’s not impossible.
