The Ground Theme (Super Mario Bros.)
The “Ground Theme” for Super Mario Bros. is considered one of the most important pieces of video game music. It’s the first-ever video game recording selected by the United States Library of Congress for its “defining sounds of the nation’s history and culture.”
The iconic opening notes composed by Koji Kondo just gives the immediate serotonin release that gets us going to save Princess Peach and beat Bowser–one of the main reasons why Super Mario Bros. is the epic game that it is today.
The Tetris theme
Tetris was first created in Russia, and its theme song was popularly known in the country as Korobeiniki (or “peddlers”). It was originally a Russian folk song based on a poem of the same title written in 1861. Over a century later–in 1989, to be exact–Hirokazu Tanaka reworked the song for the Game Boy version of Tetris, making it the theme we know and love today.
It’s also both a blessing and curse for Tetris players–there’s nothing like that sound effect when you finally get that one solid line you’ve been waiting for. It is also enough to keep you on the edge of your seat, when you can’t keep up with the speed of the falling blocks.
Dearly Beloved (Kingdom Hearts)
Square Enix has always used orchestral music to enhance their games. One great example is Dearly Beloved, the menu theme from the Kingdom Hearts series. Yoko Shimomura, who composed this tune, utilized a calm and ethereal feel that pulls you in, before turning it up at the right moment to make you feel that you’re about to start an epic adventure.
On a personal note, I used to stay on the menu screen just long enough for that moment to play before loading the game because I loved it so much.
Main Theme (Medal of Honor)
It’s no surprise how amazing the main theme for Medal of Honor turned out. After all, it was composed by Michael Giacchino, one of Hollywood’s most trusted composers. Giacchino is no stranger to evoking emotions through his music. His work on the main theme for Medal of Honor, incorporating trumpets and rolling drums to simulate the war-time feel, reminds you of the somber reality of having to go to war while also invoking a patriotic feeling that riles you into action.
