The vocabulary for gamers keeps expanding, which means our previous article, “Gaming Techtionary: Terms and Lingoes for Beginners,” only scratched the surface of what gamers use daily. Part 2 aims to provide further insight into what gaming terms you can use in your encounters; with friends or foes. Let’s keep it rolling!

Let us delve further, into the deep lingo-hole. Here’s more!

  • One Shot: When you hear your ally scream this at the top of their lungs, it can mean either A. really low enemy to be killed, you can practically blow on your monitor to kill the enemy, or B. HALF HEALTH, hell, sometimes you believe the call, you actually fall into a trap and get owned by the enemy. Be warned; this term has been memed enough to the point of ambiguity.

  • Copium: Copium is a word that is mostly used in Twitch. This is a portmanteau word that combines Cope (a psychological defense mechanism for the hard-to-swallow truth) and the word Opium (a highly addicting drug). Combined, it becomes Copium, which Twitch chat refers to using this fiction drug to deal with a loss or failure on stream. For further insight, the image above is the emote mostly used to illustrate the word.

  • Cheese: Cheese usually refers to an easy strategy involving borderline-elementary moves to beat opponents. It’s fun executing a cheese strategy, but it is extremely frustrating to be a victim. You are sat there like, “Why the F*** did I fall for that?” One clear example I can recall hearing cheese from was from the arcade when someone plays Eddie Guerrero spamming any and all buttons.

  • Thrower: Bless your soul if you are an intentional thrower. The term is straightforward because it means someone intending to lose the game, but recently, casual gamers use this on themselves when they fail to hit the easiest shots—yes, sometimes you miss shots on static enemies.

  • One More Game: Like the One Shot call out mentioned previously, this can simply mean a singular match to be played and being done for the day, or the complete opposite, a ton more games—everyone in the group has to agree to an actual last game for it to work. This can be implied for any game, but this is a prominent term used in games such as CS:GO, Valorant, Modern Warfare, or League of Legends, where one more game means playing until ending with a win. Be warned.

  • Peel: This gaming term does not involve a sharp tool shaving the skin of a tasty fruit. To peel means to protect teammates by either occupying threats or killing them entirely in a game. As a strategy, the enemy team would aim to kill high-priority targets because they usually deal the most damage, being the game-changing character of a match. Because of this, they would usually die first, so teammates would usually ask to peel for that character to keep them safe and deal that supposed damage.
