Restricted access to servers and content can put a dent into enjoying entertainment such as streaming or playing games; you get booted out of specific game servers or even lack the shows you wish to watch due to your location. Sucks right? This is why we have VPNs that aid our internet escapades to continue enjoying the things we love securely.

Great to have and easy to use.

Speaking of security, ensure your smart home device network is kept safe from outsiders with ASUS ROG Rapture GT-AX11000. You can monitor your network and maintain fast internet speeds! We previously issued a Beginner’s Guide To VPN, so if you want to check it out. Let us dive into the life of a VPN user.

The choice. Multiple VPN options exist; some offer free but limited use as a trial run. I wasn’t looking for a VPN at the time. However, our Discord server had a discussion about getting one where everyone can just pitch some money in for access. After a brief call, we opted for Surfshark.

The reason is its real-time notifications that send the host email information, such as which databases were breached and whether or not our personal information was leaked. Another cool feature was its active antivirus scanner that checks whatever we download before use. These were the most practical features on top of its malware and ad blocker we enjoy using.

One year into VPN. We opted for the two-year plan for Surfshark, meaning we all have a year till we have to renew our plan. I use VPN when playing games such as Hell Let Loose and, most recently, Overwatch 2. Due to our time differences in the Philippines, finding a viable server that could accommodate all of us took a lot of work, especially with ping.

When switching servers, at least we can remain in the lobby alongside our American pals, but with high ping–but hey, at least we are still in the same game. This also worked both ways for them when we played competitively on our servers.

For streaming, I used to set up my server in Canada whenever watching Netflix. This granted me access to 8000 more titles than the 1000 titles the Philippines was getting. Take note of the statement “used to” because Netflix has restricted VPN use on their platform. If Netflix detects VPN IP addresses, a prompt that shows ‘error code m7111-1331-5059’ will pop up and temporarily block you from all Netflix services. Will it affect you permanently? Not really; it will just last a few hours.

Final say. I game a ton, and I usually dwell in other lobbies that promote communication with one another, something I don’t get in Asian servers. Even with Netflix’s VPN ban, I see myself using VPN in the future as I continue to game. Having the additional security and anonymity is comforting to have in consciousness, which allows me to focus on what needs to get done or what is in front of me.
