The conclusion of a beloved series is an inevitable reality. Even the biggest and most popular shows had to end at some point. The best-case scenario is when a show ends its run on its own terms. However, not every show can exit gracefully. It’s a true tragedy when a series gets prematurely canceled. Especially when it was just hitting its creative stride, but don’t let that deter you from discovering what made shows like these great. Check out these five great gems canceled too soon by streaming them on HBO Go with PLDT Home.

We wish these five series could have run for much longer!

Our Flag Means Death

This quirky and hilarious historical comedy, inspired (very loosely) by real-life events, navigated the eccentric world of pirates during the “Golden Age of Piracy” with unmatched wit and charm. Taika Waititi was phenomenal in his portrayal of Blackbeard, and the ensemble cast had amazing chemistry together. Unfortunately, it has to join this list after its cancellation in early 2024. Thankfully, we can still stream Our Flag Means Death on HBO Go with PLDT Home.

Looking

Looking was a revolutionary series for LGBTQ+ representation, as the first HBO series that centered around the lives of gay men. Starring Jonathan Groff, Frankie J. Alvarez, and The White Lotus Murray Bartlett, the series uniquely portrayed gay life in San Francisco. The show's cancellation after just two seasons left many fans disappointed, but they thankfully received some closure with the release of Looking: The Movie. Rediscover the heartfelt narratives and genuine performances by streaming Looking on HBO Go with PLDT Home.

Carnivale

With its dark, mysterious atmosphere and intricate plot, Carnivale brought a unique blend of fantasy and drama to the small screen. It started strong, with its premiere breaking HBO ratings records. Sadly, the macabre, slow-burn, surrealist drama wasn’t for everyone, and it was untimely canceled after only two seasons of a planned six-season run. Despite its many unresolved storylines, it’s still worth binging or revisiting over and over. Stream Carnivale on HBO Go with PLDT Home.

Vice Principals

After the great success of Danny McBride’s earlier hit series for HBO, Eastbound & Down, and creating one of the more iconic modern characters in television with Kenny Powers, many had high hopes for his next series, Vice Principals. Starring alongside brilliant character actor Walton Goggins, it had all the ingredients for long-term success. However, with McBride only having planned it to have a finite story that lasted only two seasons, it’s one of the rare self-cancellations that we wish went on to do more. Stream Vice Principals on HBO Go with PLDT Home.

Enlightened

Fans of The White Lotus and its brilliant dissection of entitlement will love this series. From the same creator, Mike White, Enlightened was the series that crawled so The White Lotus could run. With a great mix of workplace shenanigans and personal mental health struggles, Enlightened definitely deserved a longer run. Stream Enlightened on HBO Go with PLDT Home.
