The gaming landscape in 2023 has proven to be exceptionally captivating, thanks to games like Baldur's Gate 3, the surprising Hi-Fi rush, which melodically blew my mind, and many many more. This time, we set our sights on Apple and their interesting stride towards gaming–particularly on the mobile front.

Is it the next contender for your go-to mobile gaming device?

Apple’s vision for mobile gaming. Apple boldly proclaims its intent to bring “true-to-life gaming to the palm of users' hands with console titles never before seen on a smartphone, like Resident Evil Village, Resident Evil 4, Death Stranding, and Assassin’s Creed Mirage.” That statement is particularly noteworthy because some of our current gaming systems have outdated performance that can barely open ten tabs of Chrome–am I right?

Introducing its newest chip. Fueling this gaming revolution is the A17 Pro, an industry-first 3-nanometer chip that powers the iPhone 15 Pro and 15 Pro Max. For performance, its CPU is up to 10% faster with microarchitectural and design improvements. Additionally, Apple mentions that its chip is capable of hardware ray tracing acceleration, so with this technology, it can compete with NVIDIA’s DLSS and Intel’s XeSS.

Storage conundrum. The hood contains excellent stuff, but can its other parts keep up? As a reminder, standard iPhone models typically come in at 128GB of storage. Considering past game storage trends for games like Assassin's Creed, gamers face at least 60GB. Now, will users be willing to sacrifice that much?

Display and controls. Furthermore, another factor is screen size and ergonomic controllers. Unlike dedicated handheld consoles that provide a dedicated controller and ample screen space, the iPhone may necessitate reliance on on-screen controls or the integration of third-party compatible controllers, potentially impacting the gaming experience.

So, in terms of sheer mobile performance, the iPhone has the potential to be at the top, if not at the pinnacle, among gaming devices. Its capacity to run triple-A titles puts it in league with some PC setups, signaling a paradigm shift in portable gaming.

As Apple takes bold strides towards revolutionizing mobile gaming, the iPhone 15 Pro and 15 Pro Max stand poised at the forefront of this evolution. Their unparalleled performance capabilities and potential to deliver console-like experiences is an indicator of a promising future for gaming enthusiasts. The stage is set; the question remains, are gamers ready to embrace this new era? What do you think?
