AB_Secret Stash_ 4 Movies You (Probably) Didn_t Know Were Based on Comic Books

Comic book movies have become box office juggernauts in recent years. Thanks to titles like The Batman and the DC Universe of films—which include Wonder Woman, Shazam, and Black Adam—comic book movies are part of the pop culture zeitgeist.

Their comic book origins went under the radar!

With that, you may not know that these four films were based on comic books. Check out these underrated picks, now streaming on HBO Go and Lionsgate Play, and powered by PLDT Home!

Atomic Blonde

Atomic Blonde is actually based on the graphic novel The Coldest City by Antony Johnston. Even though it was released in 2017–during the height of the comic book movie era–the film wasn’t promoted as such. The film adapted many elements from the comic, except for the very noticeable difference of the action being turned up from one to eleven. Check out Atomic Blonde on Lionsgate Play powered by PLDT Home.

The Losers

With a cast of veteran and future comic book movie actors, it’s surprising that the The Losers isn’t talked about. The film adaptation is an action-comedy that definitely made the comic book storyline more palatable for the mainstream audience. However, there’s no denying that certain changes were definitely an improvement—Journey’s Don’t Stop Believin’ as the gang’s theme song being one of them! Red

From Lionsgate Official Website

When you have the likes of Bruce Willis, Morgan Freeman, John Malkovich, and Helen Mirren as part of your cast, the mention of Red being based on a graphic novel becomes secondary. It may have been intentional, as the tone of the film and its story deviates from the comic book miniseries. Where the comics was a lone-wolf revenge story, the film is a team-up for “one last mission” action-comedy. The film also introduces new characters that aren’t in the comics—namely, Freeman and Malkovich’s characters in the movies. Watch Red and its sequel Red 2 on Lionsgate Play powered by PLDT Home.

Oblivion

Courtesy of HBO Go

Despite it being advertised as “based on the graphic novel,” Oblivion actually started out as a screenplay by the film’s director, Joseph Kosinski. He then decided to turn it into a comic book, but it was eventually picked up by Universal Studios. Meanwhile, the graphic novel was put on hold…seemingly indefinitely. It’s one of the rare cases where the original material never came out, and we think that’s worth a mention. Stream Oblivion on HBO Go powered by PLDT Home.
