Koreans are foodies at heart, and whether you’re watching a Korean drama or variety show, you’re bound to see gratuitous shots of mouthwatering food and individuals gorging on the meal. It’s enough to leave you wondering whether what they’re eating really tastes as good as it looks.

Make like a chef and be inspired to whip up something good!

Luckily, many variety shows demonstrate the recipes and cooking process so you can try it for yourself. To help you get started, here are some of our favorites from K-variety shows on Viu Premium! Anchovy Mung Bean Sprout Noodles Three Meals a Day: Doctors

Don’t miss out on this variety show, which sees the cast living in a country house in a small mountain village and tasked to use whatever food they find there to cook three meals a day. In episode 3, actor Yoo Yeon-Seok decides to make Anchovy Mung Bean Sprout Noodles for lunch, and the dish becomes even more special because his on-screen mom, Kim Hae-Sook, helps him prepare it! What you’ll need:

For the broth

One whole white onion

Radish

Anchovy

Green onion

Kelp

Shiitake mushrooms

Dried shrimps

For the noodles

Carrot (julienned)

Zucchini (julienned)

Somyeon (thin wheat flour noodles)

For the sauce

Green onions

Red and green pepper

Soy sauce

Plum extract

Red pepper powder

Sesame seeds

Perilla oil

Directions:

  • Remove the guts of around 10-15 anchovies and put the fish in a pot. Stir-fry without cooking oil.
  • Chop the vegetables and mushrooms. Pour around 2 liters of water and put the vegetables in along with the dried shrimp. Put the lid on and bring to a boil.
  • Stir-fry the carrot and zucchini for the garnish. Add salt to taste.
  • Rinse the mung bean sprouts. Place on boiling water and blanch. Set aside.
  • Prepare the sauce. Chop the green onions into small pieces and mince the red and green peppers. Put soy sauce, plum extract, red pepper powder, sesame seeds, and perilla oil in a small bowl. Mix well.
  • Boil the noodles in a pot according to the packet. Scatter them so they won’t stick together.
  • When the noodles are done, quickly rinse in cold water.
  • Squeeze the noodles to remove excess water and transfer to bowls. Add the mung bean sprouts, veggies, and broth. Finish with a spoonful of sauce. Serve!

What you’ll need:

One pack of instant ramyeon

Snow crab (or any crab!)

Clams

Sliced green onions

Directions:

  • Cut the crab into small pieces and put it inside a pot with four cups of water. Add four clams, a generous amount of crabs, and the soup powder. Bring to a boil.
  • Add the noodles to the boiling water. Refer to the ramyeon packet on how long to boil the noodles.
  • Transfer to a bowl and garnish with green onions. Serve with kimchi on the side!

Banana Brulee – The Backpacker Chef

Celebrity chef Paik Jong-Won stars in this cooking variety show, where he and three other “backpacker chefs” go on business trips to fulfill special requests made by their customers. While Chef Paik is the main man with the recipes, his co-stars are also tasked to create their own dishes. In episode 5, actor Ahn Bo-Hyun wows military soldiers with his yummy dessert creation! What you’ll need

Ripe bananas

Granulated sugar

Powdered sugar

Cinnamon

Kitchen torch

Directions

  • Cut your banana in half, length-wise. Sprinkle sugar generously.
  • Using your kitchen torch, brulee the sugar until it becomes a caramelized golden brown.
  • Add another coat of sugar and brulee it again.
  • Add cinnamon powder and powdered sugar.
  • Refrigerate for 20 minutes, then serve!
