To start off, pro wrestling events and matches are predetermined or scripted. It’s a unique theater of simulated competitive sports performed by skilled athletes for our entertainment. Due to its scripted nature, anything that happens inside the ring that’s part of the script is a “work”, and going off-script is called a “shoot”. Going off-script is extremely frowned upon in pro wrestling because it breaks “kayfabe”, a term for the portrayed reality of the storyline and characters that wrestlers are encouraged or required to maintain both in and out of the ring.
How pro wrestling enhances the drama in Heels
Heels, despite utilizing the backdrop of pro wrestling, is not primarily a pro wrestling series. It doesn’t solely revolve around the kayfabe storylines and characters inside the wrestling ring but also the behind-the-scenes part of the industry as well.
At its core, Heels follows the drama behind the scenes between the two brothers Jack (Stephen Amell) and Ace (Alexander Ludwig) Spade, and how their lives and motivations as real life brothers bleed into the kayfabe storylines they portray as wrestlers for the Duffy Wrestling League (DWL).

With Jack being the older brother and the successor to DWL after their father passed away, he’s tasked to write the scripts for the DWL shows. As the scriptwriter, it causes a clash between Jack and his younger brother Ace; with the latter wanting to prove he’s better than his older brother not just in “kayfabe”, but in their ‘real’ lives as well.

This dual aspect of their rivalry is riveting as a viewer, as it adds layers to each character’s motivations and arcs. Jack is the “heel” in “kayfabe” but is obviously the character the show wants us to root for outside of it, while Ace is the “face” in “kayfabe” but is constantly complicating his relationship with his brother. It’s this aspect of pro wrestling that truly adds depth to the storytelling you can experience in Heels.
